Geography, capital, space programmes: from military control to Earth Observation | GEONIGHT 2023
World Geography Night 2023 is an event taking place worldwide on Friday 14 April 2023.
Since its first edition in 2018, World Geography Night (GeoNight) aims to highlight geography and geographers and to be able to give the general public the opportunity to become familiar with geographical concepts and studies, making geographical research more accessible to all.
This year the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the University of Padua is actively participating in the programme with the aim of contributing to the dissemination and diffusion of geography and GIScience topics through didactic and scientific activities such as conference and seminars.
The event we present in this news is:
Geography, capital, space programmes: from military control to Earth Observation
– 18.00 – 19.00 (UTC+1)
Space exploration began in the early 1970s and has characterized recent human history. Satellites and space stations developed another kind of conquest, of political and economic supremacy over the Earth by extraterrestrial tools. Following the bipolarism dictated by the Cold War between the USSR and the USA in the early years, to date, space exploration presents new players such as China and new forms of threat linked to cyberspace and imperceptible on Earth, up to the more visible ones such as laser weapons and hypersonic missiles dominate the utopian dreams of conquering Mars and other planets.
