The International Night of Geography 2023 is an event taking place worldwide on Friday 14 April 2023.
Since its first edition in 2018, the International Night of Geography (GeoNight) aims to highlight geography and geographers and to be able to give the general public the opportunity to become familiar with geographical concepts and studies, making geographical research more accessible to all.

This year the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence of the University of Padua is actively participating in the programme with the aim of contributing to the dissemination and diffusion of geography and GIScience topics through didactic and scientific activities such as conference and seminars.

The event we present in this news is:

New territorial sustainable paths: participatory mapping, empowerment and cooperation

-21.00 – 22.00 (UTC+2)

Speakers

  • Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim | Indigenous environmental activist, geographer, President of the Association for Indigenous Women and Peoples of Chad (AFPAT), Member of the United Nations Permanent Forum for Indigenous Issues; Member of the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC); Member of the Advisory Committee to the Secretary-General’s 2019 Climate Action Summit; and Conservation International Senior Indigenous Fellow
  • GIShub Association

During this seminar we will have the pleasure of listening the presentation of good practices of participatory mapping related to the inclusion of rural and indigenous knowledge in the conservation and management of the natural resources of a determined territory, impacted by the current climate crisis.
From the Lake Chad Region to Ecuadorian Amazon, through the use of cartography (printed and digital) and GIScience tools (mobile apps for mapping, drones), we will get know about two projects whose the main goal has been to involve local communities (rural and indigenous) and promoting cooperation between different actors to build together a safer and more prosperous sustainable future paths.
